Un kit est composé au minimum d'une grosse caisse, d'un tom suspendu et d'un floor tom (ou tom basse). Beaucoup de kits incluent 2 toms suspendus et 1 floor tom, auquel le fabricant peut rajouter une caisse et un pack de hardware avec stands, pieds et pédales. Il vous faudra choisir en premier lieu le diamètre de votre grosse caisse (de 16" à 26". 20" et 22" sont les diamètres les plus courant). Les fabricants de batteries les plus réputés sont Gretsch, Yamaha, DW, Ludwig, Pearl, Tama, Mapex, PDP, Natal ou bien Sakae. Chaque batteur.euse à sa marque préférée. Tous les fabricants actuels proposent des batteries de qualité, mais chacun à sa spécialité de conception et ses bois de prédilection. Votre budget est un élément clé car il déterminera les gammes et séries disponibles. Si vous hésitez entre plusieurs bois, sachez que l'Érable est le plus polyvalent, l'Acajou offre le son le plus chaud, le Bouleau donne plus d'attaque, les fûts mixtes Érable et bois foncé (wengé ou chêne) offriront un son polyvalent à l'attaque actuelle, alors que le mix Érable et Peuplier donnera un son plus calme.
